What Supabase is for
Almost every app needs the same back-office pieces: a database to store customers and orders, a login system, a place to keep uploaded files and some code that runs on the server. Supabase gives you all of them in one project, on top of Postgres, a standard database you can take elsewhere later. You pick the region closest to your users, so the app responds fast.
How it plugs into your product
- 1Create a project at supabase.com and choose the region closest to your users; the region can't be changed later without migrating.
- 2Create your tables and the access rules (RLS) that decide which user sees which row.
- 3Install the Supabase library in the app and switch on the login methods you want (email, Google, phone).
- 4Before launch, connect your own email sender (SMTP) and, if you use phone login, an SMS provider such as Twilio.
Does it fit your idea?
It fits if
- A B2B SaaS with customers, plans and invoices that fit neatly in tables and need SQL reports.
- A solo founder who wants login, database and file uploads in one bill, with servers in the US, Europe or Asia close to their users.
- An app built with Lovable, Bolt or Claude Code, since these tools already know how to wire Supabase in.
Look elsewhere if
- A side project you'll leave untouched for weeks on the free plan: it gets paused after a week idle.
- A mobile app whose main need is push notifications: Supabase doesn't send push; Firebase or OneSignal does.
- You need several separate environments or client projects on a tight budget: each paid project adds its own server cost.
What people only find out after building
Read this before you build on it. Each item links to the official page that says so.
Free projects are paused after one week without activity, and you get only 2 free projects across all your organizations.
Official source: supabase.comThe built-in email only reaches members of your Supabase team, at about 2 emails an hour. Real users get no confirmation or reset email until you plug in your own SMTP.
Official source: supabase.comPhone login doesn't send SMS by itself: you open an account with Twilio, MessageBird or Vonage and pay them per message.
Official source: supabase.comThe free plan has no automatic backups; Pro keeps 7 days, and point-in-time restore is an add-on of about $100/month.
Official source: supabase.comThe Pro fee is per organization, but each project runs its own server: every extra project adds compute (Micro is $10/month) on top.

What it costs in practice
A SaaS with 2,000 monthly active users and a 3 GB database outgrows the free 500 MB, so it goes to Pro: $25/month, which already covers one Micro server, 100k users, 8 GB of disk and 250 GB of egress. Add $10 for a custom domain on login and you're at about $35/month (estimate, in dollars).
