What Turso is for
Turso hosts SQLite databases, the small, fast kind of database that usually lives in a single file. Its trick is that creating a database is cheap, so you can give each customer, user or AI agent its own separate database instead of mixing everyone in one. It's only the database: login and file storage come from other tools.
How it plugs into your product
- 1Create an account at turso.tech, install the Turso CLI and create a database in the region closest to your users.
- 2Generate the database URL and an access token and put them in your server's environment variables.
- 3Install the libSQL client (or Drizzle/Prisma with its adapter) and create the tables.
- 4If you want one database per customer, call the Turso API to create a new one at signup.
Does it fit your idea?
It fits if
- A multi-tenant B2B SaaS that wants each customer company's data in a separate database.
- An AI product that gives each agent or user its own small database.
- An MVP with a few GB of data and well-indexed queries that can stay on the free plan for a long time.
Look elsewhere if
- You rely on Postgres extensions like pgvector or tools built for Postgres, such as Supabase.
- Your app runs heavy reports that scan whole tables, since every row scanned is billed.
- You want login and files from the same vendor: Turso is only the database.
What people only find out after building
Read this before you build on it. Each item links to the official page that says so.
"Rows read" counts every row the query touches, not just what it returns: a lookup on a column without an index reads the whole table.
Official source: turso.techOn the free plan, going over any single limit (storage, reads, writes or syncs) blocks your databases until you upgrade.
Official source: turso.techPaid plans also block at the limit unless you turn on overages, which are off by default.
Official source: turso.techAggregates like count or sum, joins and updates without an index all count a read for every row considered.

What it costs in practice
A SaaS with 2,000 monthly active users, 3 GB of data and about 1,000 rows read per user a day reads about 60 million rows a month, well within the free 500 million: $0. To avoid being blocked at a limit, Developer is $4.99/month with overages at $1 per extra billion rows read (estimate).
