What UploadThing is for

Letting users upload a photo or document usually means wiring storage, permissions, size checks and an upload button yourself. UploadThing gives you all of that ready for TypeScript apps: a button component, a server route and the storage. You don't pay for downloads, only for the space you reserve.

How it plugs into your product

  1. 1Create an account and an app in the UploadThing dashboard to get the token.
  2. 2Install the package and create a file route on the server, saying who can upload and which file types and sizes.
  3. 3Drop the upload button or dropzone component on the page.
  4. 4When the upload finishes, save the file's link in your database.

Does it fit your idea?

It fits if

  • A Next.js SaaS where users upload avatars, receipts or contracts and you want it working today.
  • A product with many downloads, where not paying per GB downloaded keeps the bill flat.
  • An MVP whose files fit in 2 GB on the free plan.

Look elsewhere if

  • A client contract requires files stored in one specific country, and UploadThing has no region there.
  • Your back end is not JavaScript or TypeScript (Django, Rails, Laravel).
  • You keep large backups or archives, where S3 or R2 charge less per GB.

What it costs in practice

A SaaS with 1,000 users storing about 30 MB each (30 GB): it doesn't fit the free 2 GB, so it's the $10/month plan with 100 GB, downloads included. Past 250 GB, the $25 usage plan charges $0.08 per extra GB. Estimate.
